From a young age, Nick Wong, Senior Principal Engineer of Technical Services (TS) Reliability Engineering, had always had a knack for tinkering and problem-solving. Growing up, he built Lego models and fixed his own motorbike. Seeing the end products of his efforts and bringing projects to life was very fulfilling for him. His passion for engineering, specifically mechanical engineering, had been a constant throughout his life.
After graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree from Nanyang Technological University Singapore, he took on several roles in the equipment and automation industry. In 2012, he joined Jurong Post TS department as a Project Lead, overseeing Cement Terminal 2. Fast forward to 2024, after a series of rotation opportunities, he is now a Senior Principal Engineer, overseeing the lifecycle of projects from contractual formalities to project management. He leads the Reliability Engineering team, which comprises ten other engineers from diverse backgrounds. Despite their differences, they are united by their commitment to safety and operational reliability.
Through challenges, he constantly reinforces the “3 Ps” with his team:
- Preparation: Understanding work plans and identifying the root cause of issues.
- Process: Devising and implementing solutions with safety as a priority.
- Presence: Being actively involved on the ground during rectification and ensuring accountability.
He also believes that open-mindedness and integrity are essential attributes for engineers, which he always encourages within his team.
People often perceive engineering as a sunset industry associated with sun, rain, dust, and sweat. However, he believes that engineering forms the backbone of everyday life. It supports infrastructure development, building shelters, and systems to make lives better. Yes, it is challenging work, but he takes pride in serving the community through his efforts. Additionally, there is career stability! The field is always searching for dedicated talents, so if the world of engineering interests anyone, he encourages them to give it a try.
On a personal note, he is grateful for JP’s support in his professional development, which recently helped him earn the “Professional Engineer” Certificate in Singapore. He remains committed to upholding integrity, excellence, and professionalism in his line of duty together with his team.
